Earl ‘The Hurricane’ Pearson Jr. Takes
$10,000 Win Lucas Oil Late Model Victory at Virginia Motor Speedway
Jamaica, VA – Two-time and defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt National Champion
Earl Pearson, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL survived a three wide battle for the lead
taking over the top spot on lap 13 and then held off a hard charging Donnie
Moran to take the $10,000 to win All American 50 presented by Thurston Spring
Service, Inc at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. Pearson in the Bobby
Labonte Racing / LifeLong Locks / MOPAR / Larry Wallace Racing Engines /
MasterSbilt Dodge Charger #44 beat Moran to the finish line by two car lengths.
Jeremy Miller was third followed by Scott Bloomquist and Terry English.
“I’ll tell you what my crew did a heck of a job, this is a brand new race car,
first time on the race track and we gambled on tires before we started the race
and changed to the soft stuff, the track was in excellent condition all night,”
said Pearson. “The car worked up top there early and that’s how we were able to
get by Rattliff and then we had the three wide race up front for a couple of
laps.”
Completing the top ten were Billy Drake, Jimmy Owens, Jason Covert, Justin
Rattliff and Steve Casebolt.
In preliminary action Earl Pearson, Jr. was the LifeLong Locks Fast Time Award
recipient with a lap of 17.677 seconds around the ½ mile track. There were 29
entrants on hand. The heat races were won by Dan Schlieper, Jeremy Miller and
Justin Rattliff. Brad Neat captured the B-Main. The Edelbrock Hard Charger of
the Race was Steve Casebolt who started 23rd after taking a provisional and
marching his way to the 10th finishing position. The K&N Clean Pass award went
to Donnie Moran.
In other action ‘The Faster Pastor’ Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA got by
defending champion Jared Powell of Charlottesville, VA on lap 19 and then went
on to record his third Victory Lap Late Model win of the season. In the
Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA took the lead
from Tommy Shiflet of Richmond, VA on lap 3 and then cruised to his third win of
the season. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division Roger Jamerson of Glen
Allen, VA rocketed from his fourth place starting position to lead every lap of
the 30 lap feature in route to his third win of the season.
Early on in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event it looked like COMP Cams
“Rookie of the Year” points leader Justin Rattliff was going to steal the
spotlight from some of the best in dirt late model racing. Rattliff set the pace
early, grabbing the lead on the opening lap. Rattliff would set a blistering
pace around the fast half-mile track with Pearson, Miller, Dan Schlieper and
English holding the top five spots with four laps in the books.
Rattliff would have a six car length lead over the field by the fifth circuit
with the first change inside the top five occurring when English went by
Schlieper for fourth on lap five. The top three of Rattliff, Pearson and Miller
would start to pull away from the fourth place battle as the trio would start to
pick up the tail end of the lineup by lap 12. Rattliff’s lead would dissipate
with Pearson and Miller closing the gap quickly as Rattliff was starting to deal
with slower traffic.
Pearson and Miller would catch Rattliff and an amazing two laps would ensue with
a three wide race for two consecutive circuits with room to spare around the
racy surface. This was happening even whIle they had to contend with lapped
traffic. Pearson would nose ahead on lap 13 to take over the lead with Rattliff
and Miller staying right there in the hunt.
The hotly contested battle for the lead would have the fans cheering each pass
in front of the main grandstand. The excitement of the race would be tempered on
lap 14 when the first caution of the race would slow the racing action as Scott
James would come to a halt in turn number four.
On the restart Pearson would be out in front with Rattliff and Miller lined up
side by side. Pearson would get the field back to green coming off of turn four
with Miller going in front of Rattliff to take over second as the duo would have
a new contender for the lead as two-time Virginia Motor Speedway Super Late
Model champion Booper Bare was hugging the bottom side of the race and was
quickly making up time on Pearson and Miller.
Bare would challenge Miller for the runner-up slot and would rocket by him on
lap 20 after a two straight cautions have been displayed on the track. Bare
strong effort was going well as he was about to pass Pearson for the lead coming
off of turn number two on lap 22 mechanical issues would force his car to slow
as he made a sharp left turn into the infield ending his night.
Pearson thought he was breathing a little bit easier now with Bare out of the
race but veteran Donnie Moran would start to pick up the challenge now. Moran,
who started ninth on the grid would bolt into the top five by the 21st lap, to
third a lap later and then when Bare went out he would take over the second
spot.
With the halfway signal given Moran was all over Pearson in the race for the top
spot. Miller was still holding third with Rattliff and Scott Bloomquist battling
it out for fourth. The top five would remain the same until Bloomquist found the
outside groove to his liking passing Rattliff on lap 30 to go to fourth.
It looked like a patented late race run by Bloomquist as there were still 20
laps remaining and plenty of time to catch up to the frontrunners. Pearson and
Moran would encounter some heavy traffic with 33 laps scored. This would enable
Moran to pull to the inside of Pearson on a couple of occasions and just when it
looked like Moran was going to grab the lead from Pearson, Pearson would split
two cars that had been running side by side in front of him for two laps.
This would put the two lapped cars between Pearson and Moran and allow some
breathing room for reigning “World 100” Champion. English would then start to
mount a charge coming to fifth with 15 to go as he was knocking on the door for
fourth.
With ten laps to go Pearson would hold a two car length lead over Moran with
Miller, Bloomquist and English trying to run them down. The fourth caution of
the race would come out for Jeff Pilkerton on lap 41 and a lap later Deane Guy
would bring out the fifth and final caution when he slowed on the race track.
With 42 laps completed an eight lap shootout would be set up as a host of
drivers would take one last shot at Pearson. English would fire the first shot
coming from fifth to third after the green waved for the restart. Bloomquist
would come right back however passing both English and Miller with five to go to
come up to third.
Now with five laps to go Pearson would again take Moran’s best efforts as the
veteran would slingshot off of turn two with the momentum closing right on the
rear on Pearson’s car heading into the third turn, but each time Pearson would
fend off Moran as the race behind them was just as close. Miller would return to
the third spot passing both Bloomquist and English with four to go.
As the frontrunners took the white flag Moran would try once more to diamond off
the corner and try and gain the momentum off of turn on Pearson. But on the
final lap Pearson would get run off of the second turn that was enough to take
his car around the remaining two corners and the main straightaway to pick up
the victory and a $10,000 payday.
In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature Jared Powell and Tom Cohick led the
26 car field to green with Powell leading the first lap with Austin Hubbard,
Cohick and Walker Arthur in the top five.
On lap 3 Arthur took third from Cohick only to give it back on lap 7. On the
next circuit Cohick got under Hubbard for second. The races first caution came
out on lap 9 for a spinning Tony Wood. On the restart Arthur would get under
Hubbard for third.
On lap 11 the battle was for the fourth spot as Hubbard worked to hold off Scott
Adams, Pat Wood, Sommey Lacey and Stevie Long. Adams would take the spot with
lacey working Hubbard for fifth.
On lap 19 the caution came out for a spin by Tyler Bailey closing the field back
up to the rear of Powell. On the restart Cohick got to the inside of Powell as
the two raced side by side for the lead. Cohick would take the lead by inches at
the line with Powell fighting back on the outside. Powell was unable to get back
past Cohick and had to turn his attentions to lacey as the two raced for second
over the next tens laps with Powell holding on for the spot. With Powell and
Lacey battling for second Cohick went on to record his third victory of the
season.
Rounding out the top five were Jared Powell, Sommey Lacey Jr., Stevie Long and
Pat Wood. Steven Evans picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie
of the Race Award with his sixth place finish.
In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Bret Hamilton and Tommy Shiflet led the
field to green and the start of a three wide battle for the lead that saw
Shiflet lead lap 1 by inches over Hamilton and Brent Bordeaux.
On lap 2 Hamilton got inside Shiflet out of turn 2 to take the lead. On lap 3
rookie Brian Maxey got past Bordeaux for third and then went to work of Shiflet
for second getting by him on lap 8 to take the spot.
On a lap 11 restart, after a quick caution, Brian Dobie got past Shiflet for
third and began to work on Maxey for second.
The races last caution came out of lap 23 closing the field back up on Hamilton.
On the restart Hamilton jumped out to a two car length lead as Dobie tried to
get under Maxey for second. With the action behind him Hamilton went on to take
his third win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Maxey, Dobie,
Shiflet and Page Harrison. Brian Maxey picked up the Thurston Spring Service
Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his second place finish.
In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Tim Shelton and Kenny Moreland
led the field to green with Roger Jamerson scooting to the inside to make it a
three wide battle for the lead with Jamerson leading the first lap.
Once out front Jamerson never really got a challenge as his car worked
flawlessly the entire event. On lap 10 Jamerson held a three car length
advantage over Davis Lipscombe and Kenny Moreland as the top three pulled away
form the rest of the field.
On lap 27 Todd Traylor took fourth from Michael Roop. Jamerson led every lap on
way to his third victory of the season. Rounding out the top five were Lipscombe,
Mooreland, Traylor and Roop. Kenny Moreland picked up the Thurston Spring
Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish.

15-Year Old Austin Hubbard takes Career
First Late Model Victory at Virginia Motor Speedway
Jamaica, VA – 15 year old Austin Hubbard of Seaford, DE has been fast all year
but had yet to put it all together to get a victory. On Fantastic Friday 2 night
at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway Hubbard ran a flawless lap to lead flag
to flag and pick up his career first Victory Lap late Model feature win in
dominating fashion.
“This feels awesome to finally get my first win, the whole crew deserves this
win. I told them that I wasn’t not going to do small donuts on the track
tonight,” commented Hubbard with a big smile.
Matt Morgan of Hughesville, MD set fast time in the Victory Lap late Model 35
lap feature and inverted the top eight putting Brett Royal and Austin Hubbard on
the front row leading the field to green with Hubbard in complete command of the
lead. A quick caution reset the field for a complete restart. Like on the first
start Hubbard rocketed to the lead.
By la p10 Hubbard was out to a ten-car length advantage over Royal, Stevie Long
and Walker Arthur. On lap 14 Morgan began his march to the front, as he took
fourth from Arthur with a textbook slide job out of turn 2. Morgan then took
third from Long before settling in behind Royal.
On lap 23 Hubbard encountered heavy lap traffic working it effortlessly. On lap
25 Hubbard had built his lead to a full straight. With two to go Hubbard had to
work through heavy traffic once again this time making a small bobble but
gathering it back up and continuing on to his first victory.
Rounding out the top five were Brett Royal, Matt Morgan, Walker Arthur and
Stevie Long. Stephan Evans picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series
Rookie of the Race Award with his sixth place finish.
In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Bobby Mazingo of
Pasadena, MD and Mary Anne Williams of Chester, VA led the field to green with
Williams working the outside to perfection to lead the first lap.
Once out front Williams began to distance her self from Michael Tolley running
in second. Behind them Daren Bolac, Scott Davis, Matt Stambaugh and Craig Folmar
battled for third. On lap 13 Folmar, now in third began pressing Tolley for
second. On lap 16 Folmar finally took second with an inside pass on Tolley out
of turn 4.
With the laps winding down Williams began running into slower traffic allowing
Folmar to close the gap. On lap 21 Folmar caught Williams and tried to get to
her inside in turn 1. Williams held off the Folmar as the two leaders worked lap
traffic. That same lapped traffic bottled up Williams allowing Flomar to get by
on the outside taking the lead on lap 22.
Once out front Folmar had clear sailing with Williams still battling the slower
traffic. Folmar would roll to his third win in as many tries by 1.779 seconds
over Williams. With the victory Folmar will not be able to start any closer than
eighth with the speedways ‘two wins in a row’ rule.
“It’s getting harder every week, everyone is getting faster. I ran out of tear
offs on lap 15 making it hard to see, if it were not for lap traffic I may not
have caught Mary Anne (Williams) she ran a great race,” commented Folmar in
victory lane.
Rounding out the top five were Mary Anne Williams, Matt Stambaugh, Daren Bolac
and Scott Davis. Matt Stambaugh picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt
Series Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish.
In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Brent Bordeaux and Eric Erwin led the
field to green with Erwin powering his way to the lead out of turn 2. Erwin
looked to be unstoppable in the opening laps until caution came out on lap 5 for
a spin in turn 4. That closed the field back up on his bumper for the restart.
On the drop of the green flag Erwin again jumped out to a good lead with
Bordeaux trying to hold off mark Schools and Bret Hamilton.
On lap 7 Schools got underneath Erwin in turn 1 but couldn’t make the pass. On
the next circuit Schools finally got past Erwin only to have the caution come
out putting Erwin back in the top spot. On the restart Schools got back to the
inside of Erwin to retake the lead. On the next lap Erwin got back to the
outside of Schools as they raced side by side for the lead with Schools holding
off Erwin at the line.
On lap 16 James Snead got past both Erwin and Hamilton to take second. At the
white flag Snead got one peak to the inside of Schools but couldn’t make the
pass work as Schools picked up his first win in thee years.
“We finally have a car that can be competitive again, it feels great to finally
get back in victory lane,” commented Schools.
Rounding out the top five were James Snead, Eric Erwin, Bret Hamilton and Brian
Maxey. Maxey also picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of
the Race Award with his fifth place finish.
In the Truckin Thunder 30 lap feature Clyde Glenn Jr. and Tim Shelton led the
field to green. Shelton took command from the outside to lead the first lap.
With the leaders heading into turn 3 caution came out for a spin by Walker
Arthur, with Shelton also heading to pit road unexpectedly. That handed the lead
to Robert Kramer with Glenn, Kenny Moreland, Roger Jamerson and Davis Lipsombe
the balance of the top five.
On the restart Lipscombe jumped to the outside and rocketed to second behind
Kramer. Another caution closed the field once again. On the restart Lipscombe
went to the outside to take the lead out of turn 2.
By lap 13 Lipscombe had company in the form of Jamerson and Arhtur as the three
battled feverishly for the lead. On lap 27 Jamerson began to apply more pressure
on Lipcombe for the lead. Entering turn four Jamerson looked to the inside and
out of turn 4 Lipscombe got in the gas a little too quick spinning and handing
the lead to Jamerson.
On the restart Jamerson held off Arthur to take home the victory and become the
third winner in as many races.
‘it just gets harder every week to win in this division, I have to dedicate this
win to my dad who has not been feeling well of late, if it were not for him I
would not be racing,” commented Jamerson.
Rounding out the top five were Walker Arthur, Michael Roop, Doug Johnson and
Jack Foulkes Jr. Roop picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie
of the Race Award with his third place finish.
The most exciting race of the night was saved for last as the All American
division put on a race for the ages. In the caution free 15 lap feature Marty
Coltrain and Johnny brooks led the field to green with brooks leading the first
lap.
On lap 6 brooks, Coltrain, Dustin Owens and Kevin Fletcher all battled for the
lead. On lap 9 Coltrain got the lead away from Brooks only to give it back the
next lap with Fletcher flowing to second. On lap 12 Fletcher tried the inside of
Brooks in turn 1 to no avail, in turn 4 it was a different story as he took the
lead for the first time with two to go.
On lap 14 Brooks got back by Fletcher for the lead as the headed to the white
flag. Brooks slide up turn 1 to give Fletcher the advantage. Out of turn two
Brooks was back to the outside and heading into the final corner with the lead.
As Brooks exited turn 4 he slid up the track allowing Fletcher to capitalize and
take the lead and win. It was Fletcher’s second win in a row.
“Now that was fun, I have to thank Greg Ferguson and Marty Coltrain for all
their help without I wouldn’t be here again tonight,” commented Flethcer.
Rounding out the top five were Marty Coltrain, Johnny Brooks Jr., Dustin Owens
and Stephen Childress.

‘The Doctor’ dominates in Super Dirtcar
Series sanctioned Paul Sawyer Memorial at Virginia Motor Speedway
Jamaica, VA – ‘The Doctor’ Danny Johnson of Rochester, NY made his first house
call to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway count as he passed Dale Planck on
lap 14 to take the lead and then held off the challenges of Matt Sheppard in the
closing laps to take home victory in the Advance Auto Parts Super Dirtcar Series
sanctioned first annual Paul Sawyer Memorial 60.
Johnson pocketed $6,000 for his 62nd career Series win in the 60-lap Paul Sawyer
Memorial presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. that was slowed by just four
caution periods.
“The car was really working for me up on the cushion, I hope we can figure out
what we have been doing right, this is four races with this car and four wins,”
commented Johnson in victory lane.
Dale Planck paced the 32-car field before fifth-place starter Johnson forged the
final lead change on lap 14. Sheppard began 13th on the grid yet moved in to
pressure Johnson with a third of the race scored. ‘Super’ Matt pulled alongside
the ‘Doctor’ on lap 30 and made several last lap challenges for the lead but the
order remained the same throughout the second half of the race. Planck settled
for third followed by current Advance Auto Parts SDS points leader Tim Fuller
and Jimmy Phelps.
In the Paul Sawyer Memorial 40 lap feature for the Super Late Models Timmy
McCreadie of Watertown, NY retook the lead from Rick Eckert of York, PA on lap
25 and held off the challenges of Jeremy Miller to take home the victory and the
$5000 top prize.
“I almost through the race away there on lap 24 when Eckert got by me, and I
thought I was headed to fourth, but I was able to get through traffic and use
the high side to my advantage. The track was awesome as usual tonight, I’ve
never been here when it isn’t,” commented McCreadie in victory lane.
McCreadie and Sean Cosgrove led the field to green with McCreadie rocketing to
the lead. Cosgrove wasn’t as lucky as he lost second to Tim Fuller. Two quick
cautions and both Cosgrove and fuller were pitside.
On the restart Eckert took second and went to work on McCreadie for the top
spot. Eckert worked the low groove as McCreadie lived up on the cushion. The two
leaders began running in heavy traffic and on lap 24 Eckert powered his #24
Mastersbilt to the inside of McCreadie to take the lead. On the very next lap in
heavy traffic Eckert jumped the cushion with McCreadie, Jason Covert and Darryl
Hills going three wide under him for the lead. McCreadie emerged the leader and
began to pull away.
With the laps winding down McCreadie held off the challenges of Jeremy Miller to
take home the victory by 2.149 seconds. Rounding out the top five were twelfth
starting Jeremy Miller, Jason Covert, eleventh starting Ricky Elliott and Darryl
Hills.
